I believe that in order to create a teaching rationale, you have to really know yourself, both as a teacher and a person. A teacher's personality and beliefs greatly influence how he or she teaches, what they will teach, and how they will conduct their classroom.
Because I tend to lead a controlled and orderly life, I can be sure that my classroom will also be organized and controlled. I like to foster strong relationships, which means that I will form strong bonds with my students and get to know them very well. I will understand how each of my students learns, and their strengths, as well as their weaknesses. My careful planning will address these issues so that I can try to reach every child in my classroom. Because I am caring towards the needs of others, my classroom will take into consideration the needs and opinions of every student. My rich memory for concrete facts will benefit me in teaching my content area, Biology and General science. I will try to instill my belief in my students that hard work, effort, and perseverance can accomplish almost anything.
Establishing strong connections and relationships with my students is something that I believe is important to being a successful teacher. Adolescents are less likely to “act out” if they feel a strong connection to their teacher. Coincidentally, adolescents tend to have more respect for their teachers, when the teachers try to establish connections with their students. As for discipline in my classroom, I hope that fostering strong relationships and showing students that I respect them, will limit disciplinary problems. I believe in what Fried says about students giving the teacher respect, and also the teachers showing the student's respect. When it does come time to discipline a student, my belief is it should be done quietly by taking the student aside and not causing a scene and a distraction for other students. Usually when students are acting out, it is for a deeper reason. Therefore, by talking to the student one-on-one, you as a teacher has the opportunity to find out what is really bothering the student, or to find out if something outside of school is bothering them. This all stems from my belief of creating strong, respectful relationships with my students.
Because I believe that when children reach adolescence, they can begin to take responsibility of their actions and become self-managers. In order to do this, I have to teach good study skills, reading skills, and organization skills. I believe that it is important to instill a sense of independence in my students so they can self-manager their own behavior and academic success.
Showing interest in students’ work and progress is also something I strongly believe in. I will do this by meeting with students regularly to discuss their progress, while always highlighting the students’ strengths and achievements. These meetings can be very informal, quick conversations or more than that depending on the student’s individual needs. Showing interest in my students, makes them understand that I truly care and respect them. This will, in turn, will increase the respect the students have for myself, and create an overall better learning environment for everyone. Establishing communications with the parent/guardians of my students is also important to me. I want to make myself available to students and guardians via email and phone, for any questions or concerns they might have. Creating a wikispace or a website for my classroom, where all information about my class is available, is something I intend on doing.
I believe that learning should be fun and challenging at the same time. Science should be an exploratory and inquiry based process. Critical thinking and reflection are skills that are necessary to succeed in a science classroom. To reach and connect with a diverse group of learners, I will create interesting, engaging lesson plans. After getting to know my students well, I am better able to create lesson plans that appeal to their likes and interests, to help me teach the curriculum. Differentiating instruction is a skill that I will use to reach all my diverse learners. I believe strongly that not only do the students have much to learn from the teacher, but also that a teacher can learn much from his/her students. We can accomplish this by really listening to the students' opinions, what they have to say, what they are talking about in the hallway, and how they answer a question. It is the teacher's role to motivate students with engaging lesson plans and topics that students can relate to their everyday lives. Teachers should use current events and thought provoking topics that affect their students directly to engage students in learning. Teachers should serve as role models to the students in every way possible, especially showing students that it is important to become a life long learner. Teacher should model to students how to live life and be a good person.
